Training is essential for strengthening the knowledge and expertise of actors involved in rule of law work. This page is a central place for users to learn about practitioner and professional courses in rule of law and closely related issues that are available to participants globally, and are provided by the UN or externally by non-governmental organizations, independent institutions and universities. This compilation of training resources does not contain academic degree or related courses. - Advanced Training Program on Humanitarian Action (ATHA) offers specialized trainings for actors operating in the humanitarian field, including on child protection in emergencies and international humanitarian law.
- Austrian Study Center for Peace and Conflict Resolution (ASPR) provides trainings for professionals in peace missions, on topics such as peacebuilding and security sector reform.
- Centre of Excellence for Stability Police Units (CoESPU) is an international training facility that provides training skills for police officers who will return to their countries to develop gendarme-type forces ready to be deployed in peace support operations on behalf of the international or regional organizations.
- Centre for International Peace Operations (ZIF) holds trainings for future personnel in international peace and election observation missions.
- Centre for Security Sector Management (CSSM) organizes training courses on Security Sector Management.
- Centro de Derechos Humanos is an academic institution working throughout Latin America and based in the Law School of the University of Chile.
- Democratic Governance Training Online is an initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and provides training for UNDP staff on issues of democratic governance for development, including justice systems and parliamentary development.
- United Kingdom Department of International Development (DFID) offers rule of law trainings including the Rule of Law and Access to Justice Practitioners Course, run in partnership with the United States Institute of Peace, to provide an opportunity for practitioners to develop knowledge and skills in areas such as capacity-building in justice sectors of developing and conflict-affected countries, and combating international crime.
- Erik Castrén Institute of International Law and Human Rights in the Faculty of Law at the University of Helsinki offers courses for practitioners on issues of human rights and international law, including international criminal law.
- European Training and Research Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Austria offers training programs on in human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
- Equitas - International Centre for Human Rights Education offers human rights education.
- Folke Bernadotte Academy offers trainings in international conflict and crisis management, including general rule of law and security sector reform.
- Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (ADH) offers training programs for professionals working in the humanitarian field and confronted with legal problems related to armed conflicts.
- Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Arms (DCAF) through its International Security Sector Advisory Team (ISSAT) has developed a series of training modules for security sector reform practictioners on the core capacities and skills required to effectively support security sector reform.
- Global Facilitation Network for Security Sector Reform delivers Security Sector Reform Practitioners’ Courses, which provide practitioners with an overview of security sector reform and its constituent parts, as well as issues to consider when developing programmes and projects. The courses are funded by the government of the United Kingdom.
- International Association for Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research (HPCR International) in partnership with the Program on Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research (HCPR) at Harvard University offer professional development programs and international training sessions and workshops designed to support policymakers and practitioners engaged in humanitarian protection and assistance.
- Institute for Human Rights at Åbo Akademi University in Finland offers courses in the justiciability of economic, social and cultural rights.
- International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA) is a joint initiative by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Republic of Austria, the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) and other stakeholders. Its full programme, including academic degree courses, will commence in 2011.
- International Institute of Higher Studies in Criminal Sciences (ISISC) offers trainings for jurists in international criminal law and European criminal law.
- Institute of International Criminal Investigations (IICI) trains professionals in the investigation of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
- International Bar Association's Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) organizes training programmes for lawyers, judges and prosecutors in international human rights law and humanitarian law.
- International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) offers training programs on transitional justice.
- International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICPA) offers training to improve the professionalism and competence of corrections and prison officers.
- International Development Law Organization (IDLO) offers annual courses on legal training for development.
- International Human Rights Network (IHRN) offers training programs in the administration of justice, law enforcement and rule of law.
- International Institute of Human Rights (IIDH) in France offers courses in international and comparative human rights law, including prison administration.
- International Law Institute (ILI) offers trainings in areas of law and governance including judicial and court administration and anti-corruption.
- International Security Sector Advisory Team (ISSAT) offers a variety of training and capacity building modules. In conjunction with UNITAR, ISSAT has also produced an online e-learning training module Introductory Course to SSR Level 1 Basic Course.
- Irish Centre for Human Rights at the National University of Ireland offers courses on the International Criminal Court.
- Justice in Matters involving Child Victims Online Training, launched by UNICEF and UNODC, is aimed at providing participants with better knowledge and understanding of relevant standards, best practices and approaches in dealing with child victims and witnesses of crime.
- Loyola University Chicago, School of Law offers a new, fully accredited practice oriented LL.M. on Rule of Law for Development at the Loyola campus in Rome, Italy.
- Pearson Peacekeeping Centre trains those who serve in conflict zones, including civilians, military personnel and police officers.
- Study of the United Nations System and the Global Legal Order (SUNSGLOW) offers global training on rule of law including training for legal and judicial reform.
- Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) offers international training programmes for practitioners on thematic areas such as anti-corruption, gender, and human rights, peace and security.
- T.M.C. Asser Instituut provides executive and postgraduate education to students and professionals operating in the judicial sector. Asser's training programs range from capacity building in developing countries judiciaries towards strengthening the rule of law to interdisciplinary knowledge development for students and professionals.
- United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) provides sensitization training for UN staff in Security Sector Reform; courses for corrections officers, including pre-deployment training for seconded staff and a Management Development Course for corrections personnel deployed to peace operations; a Rule of Law Training for Judicial Affairs Officers in peace operations; and courses for international police, including pre-deployment training.
- United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) provides trainings in international law in the areas of trade, human rights, public debt management, financial services and development.
- United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW) provides training on gender equality and women's empowerment in the rule of law areas of security and law, including through the UN-INSTRAW Gender Training Wiki.
- United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research (UNICRI) offers trainings in crime prevention and criminal justice.
- United Nations International Law Fellowship Programme is a six-week course organized annually by the Codification Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs, under the Programme of Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination and Wider Appreciation of International Law, which is one of the cornerstones of the United Nation’s efforts to promote the rule of law. The International Law Fellowship Programme is designed to enable qualified persons, in particular, mid-level government legal officers and young teachers of international law from developing countries, and countries in socio-economic transition, to deepen their knowledge of international law.
- United Nations System Staff College provides trainings for staff of the UN system in peace and security, development cooperation and UN system learning and training services.
- United States Agency for International Development (USAID) offers courses in rule of law.
- United States Institute for Peace (USIP) offers a series of training courses in rule of law, as part of its Rule of Law Training Project. The courses include a Rule of Law Practitioners Course, a Rule of Law and Access to Justice Practitioners Course (run in partnership with DFID) and a new course on Land, Property and Conflict. Additional 'sub-specialty' rule of law training courses are under development.
- World Bank, Law and Justice Institutions Thematic Group organizes seminars and brown-bag lunches and staff training workshops open to practitioners in the development community interested in law and development and related subjects.
